Between Stone and Signal: ENTER AFTERLIFE at Thorvaldsen
Fusing neoclassical sculpture with sonic mythmaking, ENTER AFTERLIFE by O Future offers a considered meditation on memory, ritual, and digital liminality.

In Copenhagen’s Thorvaldsen’s Museum, the artist duo O Future recontextualises classical form through immersive technology. ENTER AFTERLIFE is not an exhibition, but an initiation: a digital rite of passage staged within one of Denmark’s most iconic historic institutions.

Thresholds in Marble and Light
Hand-drawn projections ripple across sculptures and walls, shifting mythological figures into spectral abstractions. “We imagined the museum as a passage,” reflects Katherine Mills Rymer. “A space that honours the past and also opens toward other realities.”
Structured like a game—ritualistic and recursive—the work draws on archetypes, simulation theory, and the narrative mechanics of video games. Visitors become participants in a speculative afterlife—at once ancient and contemporary.
Sonic Architectures
The sonic dimension is not incidental. Compositions are attuned to the spatial acoustics of the museum, drawing inspiration from mythic instruments—Apollo’s lyre, Mercury’s flute—now rendered in layered electronics and low frequencies.

“When the room responds to the music, it becomes a collaborator,” says Jens Bjørnkjær. “The acoustics amplify both emotion and intent.”
Bjørnkjær’s nuanced musical vocabulary—balancing classical tradition with avant-garde experimentation—provides the work with emotional depth and formal rigour.
Contemporary Mythopoesis
Unlike spectacle-driven environments by teamLab or Refik Anadol, ENTER AFTERLIFE leans into ambiguity. Its immersive quality is subtle, philosophical, and interpretive. It resists finality.
A Night of Invocation
On 17 May, as part of the Art Matter Festival, the museum becomes a ceremonial space. Animated projections, reclining guests, and enveloping sound create a shared act of reverence, not performance.
Entry as Encounter
ENTER AFTERLIFE runs from 18 May to 29 June 2025. The opening event on 17 May is free and open to all. There are no instructions—only the invitation to enter.
